Taipei Day 1: Shilin Night Market

Shilin Night Market is easily one of my favorite place to go in Taipei. The night market is at two different areas, 1 which is a huge “hawker” place with many food choices and games, while the other is filled with more food carts and shop houses selling clothes, bags, accessories, etc. In order to get to Shilin night market, just take a train and alight at Jiantian station, not Shilin.

As we went on a Wednesday night, it was not as crowded and we could easily queue and get a table with food. We decided to order the famous XXL chicken first as we fear the crowd might come in later.

The XXL chicken was pipping hot and with the chilli powder, it escalates the taste of the fried chicken. Also unlike the typical fried chicken, the meat was actually lean meat, so you will not feel sinful while eating the fried chicken cutlet.

There were so many choices of food in the hawker place, so we were kind of confused which is the best. We decided to order Taiwan’s famous bitter gourd juice and surprisingly, it tasted really good together with honey! My brother ordered the bubble milk tea but it was a disappointment.

Finally we settled our dinner at 忠誠號 (Zhong Cheng Hao), as we saw endless stream of people, especially the locals ordering food from there, so it must be good right?

Taiwan’s smelly tofu. It is different from Hong Kong’s smelly tofu as it is less deep fried, salty sauce and comes with pickled vegetables at the side. It is also less pungent, but oh so delicious!

Oyster omelet! Finally I have the chance to try the Taiwanese version of oyster omelet (ou ar jian)! Tastes nothing like the Singapore’s version, the oyster omelet was more starchy, more vegetables, bigger oysters and a special sweet sauce. I actually like both versions!

We were looking around and noticed a lot of tables ordering this dish – Keelung Tempura. Not sure what it is, we just followed along and did not regret our decision. This is probably one of my favourite food in Taipei. It is basically fried starch topped with sweet sauce. As it is freshly made hot and very “Q”, it just makes the dish even more delicious!

After the meal, we headed opposite to the other side of the market for shopping! I like the clothes as they bring in many japanese and korean styles and some are even more reasonable than buying from Wufenpu itself. Also not to forget, more food carts!

Spotted this Prince Potato cart that Adeline was recommending me before coming to Taiwan. We were undecided on which toppings to add, so we got greedy and asked for everything!

Look how generous he was! I am very happy with Taiwan *greedy face*

Prince Potato is basically a potato croquette with various toppings like corn, ham, broccoli, pineapples (depends on what you want), poured over with hot nacho sauce!! The nacho sauce is more mild and buttery, so you will not feel sick after eating.

Jesslyn was also recommending the honey fried chicken, so i figured out the competitor’s store beside the XXL chicken should be selling it. I like the honey fried chicken too as they will fry the chicken first, then grill it again with honey sauce. Yummy!

It is kind of scary announcing this but.. we ate 5 XXL chicken on the first night!! 0_0
